Sasanqua

Camellia sasanquas have smaller, tighter leaves than the japonica. They have a more compact growth habit, and will tolerate the sun. They flower from late autumn to winter, and can be used in the garden along with the japonica varieties to give your camellia garden a longer flowering period. Sasanqua flowers are not as long lasting as the japonica however many yare more fragrant.

Because of their more compact growth habit and their smaller leaves, sasanquas make excellent clipped hedges and topiaries. They are good for areas in full sun and can be used in pots on patios or around pathways. Flowers only last a couple of days before dropping.

One of the most well-known sasanqua varieties is ?Yuletide? which has orange-red flowers with compact growth and glossy green leaves. Another popular sasanqua is Plantation pink, which as large pink flowers.

Japonica

Camellia japonica varieties are the most commonly seen camellias, especially in older gardens.! These camellias are very popular because they flower from early to late spring. Their large glossy green leaves that make the plant look attractive even when it?s not in flower.

Japonica camellias are generally quite hardy, most prefer a bit of protection from the sun and strong winds, especially the white and pale pink varieties. Japonica camellias are popular as specimen shrubs in lawns and garden beds, and are also useful as screening plants. Some fast growing varieties can be trained as standards and others are suitable for growing in large containers.

Hedges

Camellias offer the perferect solution to screening ugly fences. Sasanqua camellias are best for creating hedges because of their compact growth. Most varieties have attractive glossy green foliage, with flowers in autumn.
